Cinema Arts

If you are in the Washington, DC, area and want to see interesting films, check out the Cinema Arts Theatres in Fairfax. Directions. It's at Fair City Mall, in the corner next to Marshalls. Unlike most chain theatres, this one is locally owned. They have comfortable seats, a unique selection of good food, and show first run films, independent films, and foreign films. They even have a film club. I have no financial interest in Cinema Arts; I just like promoting small locally owned businesses.

Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic

Last night, I went to the movies and saw "Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic". It's largely a film of a stand-up comedy performance by Sarah Silverman, plus some skits and music videos. Her work definitely deserves an NC-17 rating for language, although it appears she didn't submit it to the MPAA for rating. The humor was very iconoclastic and probably would offend those who shouldn't see the movie in the first place. Some of the film was laugh-out-loud, but I didn't really find it a-laugh-a-minute. Most of the humor, while clever, came from surprise over the shocking nature of her punchlines. Other concert films with off-color language, e.g., those by Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor, are much funnier. Silverman's appearance in the more offensive, but totally hilarious "The Aristocrats", is funnier than anything in this film. "Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic" is 72 mins. long.

Baseball in 2006?

Major League Baseball says it won't sell the Nationals to an owner until the DC government finalizes baseball park financing. The DC government says it won't finalize park financing until Major League Baseball ponies up money to cover coats overruns for the facility. Bud Selig forces management to run the team on the cheap. Without new owner money to pay bonuses, the team loses right-hander Esteban Loaiza to the Oakland A's. Sigh!
